Not to get sentimental or anything, but we’re really sorry that our trip has to end. Not to get ahead of ourselves, we still have four days to go.
On Saturday I was with Syreens family again and it felt like coming home. The moment that I saw the village name, my heart jumped a little jump and I was moved by Sara and Saïd that were jumping around when they saw me. I was so so happy to see everybody again and luckily for me, they had the same feeling. Syreen and I took my bags to (our) bedroom and before I knew it, I was installed again. We had a great meal, Syreens mother is a fabulous cook, and visited Syreens mother-in-law. She was leaving for Jordan the next day, so Syreen wanted to surprise her with cookies. We stopped at the local bakery and bought some cookies and some croissants.
Off course her mother-in-law was very happy with the surprise and made some ‘Sjai’ for us. It’s crazy how good the tea is here. I still have to ask Syreens mother for some recipes, because I want to make everything in Belgium. After a fun night, with a marriage proposal and lots of laughs, we headed home. I had some more schoolwork, so I sat outside, while Syreen was having fun with her friends. I was really tired, because I had a bad night sleep the night before, so I decided to have an early night.
God, I’ve missed this sound.
Mother: ‘Syreen… (something I still don’t understand) …. Syreen! ‘
Syreen: ‘Laaaa (no in Arabic)…’
Mother: ‘Laura, Syreen…!!!’
Syreen: ‘A (yes in Arabic)… Yalla (let’s go)…’
Strange how some annoying –it’s never cool to get up at 6.00 in the morning…- can become so needed. Again I realized I was home again and that made my getting up easier. We had to take the mini-bus to the University College, so Syreen and I decided to catch up on some sleep, since it’s a one and a half hour drive. I looked outside the window en started noticing how beautiful everything is. I started to think and suddenly I got a strange feeling. I don’t want to leave this place. I begin to really love Israel and everything that comes with it.
Anyway, before I start crying, Lien and Naïki were coming to the University College to, because we had to talk about the history of Belgium and the origin of the Dutch and English language. Not an easy assignment. But we managed to interest the students about our country and the current political status. We talked about English words that the English loan from our mothertongue. It was funny to see all the surprised faces of the students. Yes, we actually have something to say in this world! J
I’m going to stop it for now, but stay tuned, ‘cause the next report is only one page away…
Sincerely yours,
Laura
